The MEED Foundation, in collaboration with key partners iQ Group, Civil Development Organization (CDO), and the Swiss air quality technology company IQAir, has launched the first Air Quality Network (AQN) in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Announced during the 1st MEED Conference for Regional Development in November 2023, this initiative aims to combat air pollution by deploying 28 advanced air quality sensors across 17,000 square kilometers. These sensors provide real-time data on air pollution levels, temperature, pressure, and humidity, which is accessible through a dedicated dashboard and mobile apps.

Importance of Air Quality Data:

The AQN tracks particulate matter (PM) levels critical to health, including PM2.5, PM10, and PM1. This data helps identify pollution sources, guide interventions, and inform regulations to protect public health, especially in areas with high industrial and vehicle emissions.

Strategic Partnerships:

iQ Group, a leading internet services provider, ensures the sensors are well-connected and powered through its extensive fibreoptic network. The Civil Development Organization (CDO) supports societal development and awareness-raising campaigns.

Data Revolution Initiative:

The AQN is part of the MEED Foundation's Data Revolution Initiative launched in November 2023 to address data gaps in Iraq. This initiative leverages smart technologies to generate new public and economic data, supporting Iraq's sustainable development journey.

Launch and Accessibility:

Initiated in Autumn 2023, the AQN went like in March 2024, providing unprecedented access to air quality data for all stakeholders. This project represents a significant advancement in environmental monitoring and a critical step towards a healthier, more sustainable future in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
